It really seems like Activision is aiming to bring back some of the CoD players who have jumped ship over the years by going back to their roots, and with the news of this new bonus multiplayer map, they’ve further shown that they’re taking it seriously.
On their blog, Activision has recently announced that the fan-favorite map Carentan, which originally appeared in the earliest of CoD games, will be making a comeback in WWII. Here’s their official announcement:
“Carentan is one of the most iconic and beloved maps in Call of Duty history, having appeared in the original Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, and Call of Duty 2. Now, a brand-new version is heading to Call of Duty: WWII. Fight through the destroyed buildings and fortified streets of this war-torn French town in an all-out battle for a strategic German stronghold.
Carentan will be made available at launch as a Bonus Map for all Season Pass holders. The Season Pass for Call of Duty: WWII is already bursting at the seams, but the addition of Carentan puts it over the top.
Experience the full-scale theatre of war with the Call of Duty: WWII Season Pass*. Continue the epic journey with 4 DLC Packs in 2018 that include new and iconic Multiplayer Maps, new chapters of Nazi Zombies and all-new War Missions.”
There’s a disclaimer at the bottom of their announcement that talks about how this is specifically for people who buy the Season Pass, and it’s unclear whether or not this map will be available otherwise. It is being called a bonus map, after all, so it’s entirely possible that they’re going to use it as bait to get you to cop the season pass. If you are excited for this map but aren’t planning on getting the pass, just hold off on getting your pitchforks until we know for sure whether or not it’ll be available for purchase outside of the Call of Duty WWII Season Pass.

Here’s what the disclaimer from Activision’s blog post announcing this map:
*Season Pass purchasers receive 2018 Call of Duty: WWII Season Pass content. Season Pass content is not final, is subject to change, and may not include all downloadable content available for the game. Season Pass content may not be available in all countries, and pricing and release dates may vary by platform. Season Pass content should be downloaded from the in-game store only; do not purchase separately, or you will be charged again. Season Pass content may be sold separately. Game required, sold separately.
It seems like Activision has been listening to some of the complaints about recent installments in the franchise and wants to take things back a few steps, hence the WW2 setting, which limits things as far as jet packs go (among other things). It’s worth noting that the Nazis were supposedly working on jetpack technology, but if there is some type of propulsion backpack, we can only imagine that it won’t be a core game play element. We can hope, at least. Battlefield 1 has set the bar high as far as cinematic and historic shooters, but CoD: WW2 looks very promising.
Here’s what Carentan used to look like, things have come a long way:
Do you plan on picking this one up at launch, have you already got your pre-order in or are you going to wait? What about the season pass? If you weren’t planning on getting the season pass for CoD, is the inclusion of the Carentan map going to be enough to convince you, or nah? Most importantly, if you used to play a lot of CoD and have fallen off in recent years, is their latest going to get you back on board, or are you still just over this series?
